Walking for weight loss: How many minutes should you walk as per age?

Walking is one of the simplest and most effective forms of exercise. The duration of daily walking is, however, based on factors like age and health conditions. 

Walking has several health benefits including improved cardiovascular health and mental well-being. According to health experts, the ideal amount of daily walking varies with age groups

For young adults between 18-30 years, the optimal duration of daily walking is between 30-60 minutes. They have higher energy levels and muscle strength, so they can comfortably walk for 60 minutes a day for better results in weight loss.

The middle-aged adults of age group 31-50 can aim for 30 to 45 minutes of walking daily if looking to improve their health.

Seniors between ages 51-65 should walk for 30 to 40 minutes to keep their bones healthy, and joints ready to move. With ageing, the muscle mass and the rate of metabolism reduce, hence it is important to have a walking routine.

Elderly people should walk at a moderate pace for about 20-30 minutes a day to keep their cardiovascular systems healthy. It is essential to tailor your duration according to your body's needs and health conditions.

People above 75 should walk at a slow pace for about 15 to 20 minutes every day. The short walks will help keep their joints flexible and muscle strong.

It is necessary to wear comfortable shoes and drink lots of water to stay hydrated and energetic while walking. This form of exercise, when practised daily, reaps healthy benefits, including weight loss, muscle strengthening and joint flexibility.
