Can weight loss drugs lead to blindness ?

Deepika Shakya

A recent study by Massachusetts Eye and Ear Hospital found that some obese patients on weight loss drugs developed a rare blinding eye condition.

The study's findings are published in JAMA Ophthalmology.

The study found that patients were diagnosed with 'Non-Arteritic Anterior Ischemic Optic Neuropathy' (NAION), causing sudden vision loss.

Patients with diabetes, who frequently use weight loss drugs such as Ozempic or Wegovy, face increased risks of severe eye issues that may lead to blindness.

These weight loss drugs contain a protein called semaglutide, which helps regulate blood sugar levels by boosting insulin production.

NAION, a rare condition causing blindness, affects 2 to 10 people per 100,000, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Researchers don't yet understand why or how weight loss drugs could be linked to this rare eye condition. More studies and research are needed to uncover the connection.
