Body wash vs body scrub: Which one should you use?

Rishika Baranwal

What each product does: Body wash is your daily cleanser, specialised liquid soap that gently removes dirt, oil, and impurities while also hydrating the skin. Body scrub is your weekly exfoliator, full of granules like sugar, salt, or coffee, designed to physically buff away dead skin cells and reveal smoother skin.

Why use both: While body wash refreshes daily, scrubs should be used only 1‑2 times a week. Together, they balance cleansing and exfoliation, for fresher, glowing skin if used properly.

When to scrub: Most experts recommend applying body wash first to clean the skin, then follow up with a body scrub on damp skin. This combo maximises exfoliation while avoiding irritation.

Benefits of scrubbing: Exfoliation helps unclog pores, prevent ingrown hairs, allow moisturisers to absorb better, and give skin a smoother texture and radiant tone.

Choose right type of scrub: Pick scrubs with fine, natural grains like sugar for gentle exfoliation. Avoid coarse salt or abrasive ingredients on sensitive skin to prevent micro-tears and inflammation.

Protect your skin’s barrier: Over-scrubbing can strip away protective lipids and damage the skin barrier, leading to dryness and irritation. Moderation and moisturiser afterward are essential.

Ideal usage frequency: Body washes can be used daily for general hygiene, while scrubs are best limited to 2‑3 times per week depending on skin type and sensitivity.

Pre-shave or pre-tan prep: Using a scrub before shaving removes dead skin cells for a closer, smoother shave and helps avoid razor bumps. It also creates a perfect base for even tanning.

Sensitive skin tips: If you have dry or easily irritated skin, choose ultra-gentle scrubs or chemical exfoliants like lactic acid and use them less frequently. Always follow with fragrance-free lotion.
