The Darvaza Gas Crater is a natural gas field collapsed into a tunnel, creating a large hole. It has been burning continuously since 1971.
The hole resulted from a Soviet drilling accident. During drilling, the ground collapsed, and to avoid the release of poisonous gases, it was decided to ignite the gas.
It is situated in the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan, about 260 kilometers north of Ashgabat, the capital.
The flames from the hole can reach heights of about 20 meters, and the glow from the burning gas can be seen from miles away.
Despite its remote location, the Darvaza Gas Crater has become a tourist attraction, drawing visitors who are fascinated by the otherworldly sight.
The hole is sometimes referred to as the "Door to Hell" because of its fiery appearance. The flames give it an odd and weird quality, especially at night.
The environmental impact of the continuous burning is a subject of concern.
Locals often call it the "Gates of Hell" due to the fiery spectacle and the seemingly bottomless pit.
Despite its initial accidental creation, the Darvaza hole has attracted scientific interest.
