The nearest black hole to Earth is Gaia BH1. Here's what we know about it:
Distance: Roughly 1,560 light-years away, located in the constellation Ophiuchus. (For comparison, the nearest star to our Sun is only 4.24 light-years distant.)
Discovery: Identified in September 2022 by a team led by astronomer Kareem El-Badry.
Detection Method: Gaia BH1 doesn't have a companion star, so it was spotted by analyzing the way its gravity bends the light of a more distant star behind it.
Mass: Around 9.6 times the mass of our Sun, making it a stellar-mass black hole (as opposed to the supermassive black holes found at the center of galaxies).
Binary System: Not confirmed to have a companion star, which is unusual for stellar-mass black holes.
Visibility: Not directly visible with the naked eye, but potentially observable with a powerful telescope or through special space telescopes.
Safety: No threat to Earth whatsoever due to its immense distance.
