Uttar Pradesh's one city served as capital of India for one day during British colonial rule.

The British East India Company, which governed India at that time, decided to shift the capital from Calcutta to Allahabad temporarily.

The purpose of this small capital change was to mark the proclamation of Queen Victoria's assumption of the governance of India from the East India Company.

UP's Allahabad, now known as Prayagraj, was the capital of India for one day in 1858.

The historic announcement known as the Queen's Proclamation was read out by Lord Canning, the Governor-General of India, at a grand ceremony in Allahabad.

The choice of Allahabad as the capital for the day was strategic, given its central location in North India and its historical significance.

The ceremony in Allahabad symbolised the formal transfer of power from the British East India Company to the British Crown.

After the one-day event, the capital was reverted to Calcutta (now Kolkata), which remained the capital until 1911 when it was shifted to Delhi.
