James Anderson, a stalwart of English cricket, retired with a remarkable tally of 704 wickets, having delivered 40,031 legal balls.
Anderson made history by becoming the first fast bowler to deliver 40,000 balls in Test cricket, making him the fourth bowler overall to achieve this milestone in the format.
Muttiah Muralitharan is at the top of the list. He has bowled a whopping 44,039 deliveries in Test cricket.
Muralitharan, who has taken 800 wickets in Test cricket, is likely to remain the top wicket-taker in Tests.
Anil Kumble is fourth on the list of leading wicket-takers in Test cricket, but he holds the second spot for delivering the most balls, with a total of 40,850.
Kumble snagged 619 wickets during his Test career, with an average of 29.65.
Shane Warne is ranked third on the list, with 40,705 balls delivered in Tests, behind Muralitharan and Kumble.
Warne is currently second on the list of leading wicket-takers with 708 scalps.
Stuart Broad comes in next after Anderson with 33,698 deliveries under his belt. But, Nathan Lyon is the only other active player besides Anderson to have bowled over 30,000 deliveries.
