Know why cholesterol levels rise in winter

Vaishali Shastri

Winter is said to aggravate cholesterol levels and risk of cardiovascular diseases, according to experts.

Low temperatures can cause high-blood pressure, increased heart attacks, and high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol risking patients with heart conditions.

Slow metabolism, reduced blood flow in arteries, high-fat foods, and reduced physical activities are found to be among the various causes of high cholesterol in winter months.

To improve cholesterol levels, one should opt for regular light to medium exercises.

Increased intake of seasonal vegetables, healthy fats and whole grains can help in maintaining heart health.

Experts advise to go out more frequently in the sun to get enough vitamin D to maintain the ratio of bad to good cholesterol.

Heart patients are advised to monitor their lipid profile in winter season.

Healthy behaviours and monitoring health can keep one from diseases related to high cholesterol.
