Indian Railways: 5 digits on trains explained

Train numbers in India consist of 5 digits. But what do these digits mean?

First digit: The first digit represents the zone in which the train starts its journey. For example, 1 for Northern Zone, 2 for Eastern Zone, etc.

Second and third digits: The second and third digits represent the type of train. For example, 20-29 for superfast express, 30-39 for Rajdhani Express, etc.

Fourth digit: The fourth digit represents the division where the train is maintained. For example, 0 for headquarters, 1 for Mumbai, 2 for Delhi, etc.

Fifth digit: The fifth and last digit represents the serial number of the train. It ranges from 1 to 999.
