The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has confirmed the detection of two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) in Karnataka. Here are symptoms, treatment and preventive tips

HMPV (Human Metapneumovirus) is a respiratory virus that can cause mild to severe respiratory illness.

Following the recent reports of an outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), Kerala Health Minister Veena George on advised the elderly and pregnant women to wear masks, adding there is no need to panic as of now.

Common symptoms of HMPV infection include cough, fever, nasal congestion, sore throat, and difficulty breathing.

Severe cases can lead to pneumonia and hospitalisation, particularly in vulnerable populations.

There is no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV; management typically involves supportive care such as hydration and fever reducers.

Preventive measures include practicing good hand hygiene, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and staying home when feeling unwell.
