Hollywood films inspired by Indian literature

Life of Pi: Directed by Ang Lee, this film is based on Yann Martel's novel of the same name. It follows the story of Pi Patel, a young Indian boy.

Lion is directly adapted from Saroo Brierley's (An Indian boy) personal experiences as documented in his book, not from another film.

Slumdog Millionaire: Though not a direct adaptation, this film is inspired by Vikas Swarup's novel "Q & A." It tells the tale of Jamal Malik, a young man from the slums of Mumbai who becomes a contestant on the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?.

The Namesake: Directed by Mira Nair, this film is based on Jhumpa Lahiri's novel.

Monsoon Wedding (2001): Directed by Mira Nair, the movie takes inspiration from various aspects of Indian culture and society. 

The Jungle Book (2016): Based on Rudyard Kipling's collection of stories, particularly "The Jungle Book" and "The Second Jungle Book," this film directed by Jon Favreau brings to life the adventures of Mowgli, a young boy raised by wolves in the Indian jungle.

Brick Lane (2007): Inspired by Monica Ali's novel, the film follows the story of a Bangladeshi woman who moves to London for an arranged marriage and navigates her life and identity as an immigrant.

Water (2005): Directed by Deepa Mehta, this film is part of her elemental trilogy and is based on societal issues in India. It explores the lives of widows in Varanasi during the 1930s.

Before the Rains (2007): Loosely based on the novel "The Elephant's Journey" by José Saramago, this film is set in 1930s colonial India and revolves around an affair between an English spice plantation owner and his housemaid, leading to societal and personal consequences.
